I’ve known of Jesse Stuart since living for a brief time in Kentucky many years ago, though I’ve read very little of his work. And I had no idea he originally aspired to being a poet. I think fate pushed him in the right direction with fiction. Though there are some enjoyable poems in this volume, many are very ordinary. I hope that the people of Albertville have discovered his fiction since he is certainly a kindred country spirit and is considered an important regional author, but his poetry doesn’t need to be kept on the shelf in the face of no interest.
