The New Oxford Book of American Verse

Like the Columbia Anthology of American Poetry that I reviewed two days ago, this is a large compendium of American poetry going back to the first English language poetry written on this continent. I had hoped to say that it’s good to have two such volumes on a library’s shelves. However, it’s hard to miss the fact that this volume’s circulation died completely after the arrival of the more up-to-date Columbia Anthology. Thus, though this is still a wonderful anthology of our literary history, I’m going to recommend letting it go. There simply isn’t enough demand to keep two and the more current one appropriately trumps the old-timer.
