I have a lot of respect for Jay Parini as an editor. He has created many wonderful anthologies and this is one of them. It’s a great comprehensive sampling of American poetry that would be suitable for any library (and would be a great gift for a young person who has an interest in poetry). Unfortunately these sorts of anthologies become dated after a time. Watch for another updated “Columbia” anthology some time in the next ten years. It wouldn’t hurt to keep this one on the shelf while adding another that includes more contemporary poets.
