This was a risk that didn’t work (according to circulation). Ishmael Reed is a respected poet but he is just too edgy for Albertville. His novelties are not likely to ever be appreciated here. I might defend keeping this as a diversity component to the collection but it can’t function very effectively in that regard if it’s never read. And it’s not like the poetry of Reece (previous review) that I can imagine reading to a group of people here in Albertville and imagine them enjoying it. In other words, I see no way to win them over to this book. It’s just not their cup of joe (but rather a more jive, jazz, hoodoo cup of joe they would wrinkle their nose at and never order again). Turn this book loose to find someone it can sing to.
