The Oxford Book of Christmas Poems

This is a really lovely collection of seasonal poems that includes poets from Great Britain and the U.S. There are others as well, some well-known, some unknown. It has a poem by the Latin poet Martial and it has old traditional poems of the season that are anonymous. It’s a delightful combination that keeps interest from flagging. It has not only poems about the holy day specifically but about the season in general, spilling over a bit into January and February, and ending with a silly poem about the entrance of spring.

It seems perfectly natural in the U.S. to have a book of Christmas poems in any library. It’s a shame this one hasn’t been more appreciated over the years.
