If poetry gets little circulation, it’s no surprise that poetry criticism gets even less. This volume of criticism by an Irishman has a lot to recommend it despite the lack of attention it has received. Donoghue’s writing style is conversational and eight of the ten writers he examines have remained important in the canon of American literature. I’m going to recommend this volume stay on the shelf on the assumption the collection overall doesn’t have an excess of criticism.
